Its on of the big things when you start Warmachine, what are the factions? What do they do?  Which on is best? Which one should I pick?

The first point to make is that no one faction is all powerful, over the last year or so every single faction has won a major tournament.  Thats not to say that all factions are equally easy to win with, just that all factions can (and do) win
